March 2026 EV Registrations: Read the Fuel Mix Correctly
Track new car registrations by fuel type and understand why EV share, fleet population and COE demand are different measurements.
New-car registrations show the fuel mix of vehicles registered in a month. They are useful for tracking adoption, but they do not directly measure the fuel mix of submitted COE bids.
| Fuel type | Registrations |
|---|---|
| Electric | 3,087 |
| Petrol | 295 |
| Petrol-Electric | 1,583 |
| Petrol-Electric (Plug-In) | 84 |
Registrations are not COE bids. This source does not establish a model-level leaderboard, fleet population or charging-point count.
The checked March source contains 3,087 electric cars out of 5,049 new car registrations, or 61.14%. The other fuel totals are 295 petrol, 1,583 petrol-electric and 84 plug-in petrol-electric. These totals include the source’s separate importer records.
Data correction, 13 September 2026: our earlier import merged records that differed by importer type. The corrected import retains both records, restoring the full totals above. Percentages calculated from the previously incomplete totals should not be used.
Define the share before calculating it
An electric-car share should use the electric-car count divided by all car registrations in the same source and period. State whether taxis are included, and keep petrol-electric hybrids and plug-in hybrids distinct from fully electric cars unless the chosen measure explicitly combines them.
A monthly flow is different from the share of all cars already on the road. Combining those denominators can make adoption appear much faster or slower than the data supports.
Registration is later than bidding
A certificate can be secured before the vehicle is registered. Category E may also be used for eligible cars. Therefore March registrations cannot simply be assigned to March’s submitted bids, or counted as additional demand on top of the same car buyers.
What this dataset cannot rank
A fuel-type total does not identify the most popular model, its exact variant, dealer market share or the number of charging points available. Earlier model and charging-network claims without matching sources have been removed. Those questions need their own datasets and definitions.
Connect adoption to the actual purchase
Check the approved variant’s COE category, emissions treatment and final quote. The current fully electric Category A power ceiling is 110kW; a brand name does not determine category. Charging access, tariffs, insurance and road tax belong in the ownership comparison.
For registration in 2026 versus 2027, see the EV incentive and break-even guide. Its dated policy treatment should be used instead of older generic rebate ranges.
Make the tracker reproducible
Keep the source month, fuel labels and denominator with every quoted percentage. If a later source correction changes the count, update the derived share as well. A clear measurement is more useful than an unsupported claim that EV growth caused a specified COE premium increase.
