Understanding COE Category Differences
Compare premiums for the same exercise. Category eligibility depends on vehicle type, engine capacity and power, with separate limits for fully electric cars. The shared category definitions are:
- Cat A — Cars up to 1600cc and 97kW; fully electric cars up to 110kW
- Cat B — Cars above 1600cc or 97kW; fully electric cars above 110kW
- Cat C — Goods Vehicles & Buses
- Cat D — Motorcycles
- Cat E — Open Category (excluding motorcycles)

A wider spread records a larger difference in premiums. It does not identify buyer motivations, establish that luxury-car demand increased or predict the next exercise.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Category A and Category B?
Non-fully electric cars use both engine-capacity and maximum-power limits. Fully electric cars use a separate motor-power limit. The maintained category definitions above state both sets of boundaries; check the exact registered specification.
Why does Category E (Open) exist?
Category E is the Open Category for eligible vehicles other than motorcycles. Its quota and premium are determined separately. It is not guaranteed to cost more than either car category.
Which COE category do SUVs and crossovers fall under?
Body style alone does not establish a COE category. Use the exact engine capacity, maximum power and drivetrain against the category definitions, including the separate limits for fully electric cars.
Why is there sometimes a large price gap between categories?
The spread measures the difference between the two premiums. It does not isolate the effect of luxury-car demand, economic sentiment or any other proposed cause. Compare quota and bids for the same exercise without treating correlation as proof.
