Buying a Car in December: Registration Deadlines and Package Risks
Check year-end registration incentives, delivery commitments and COE terms before treating a December promotion as a saving.
December can matter because a specific registration rule changes at year-end. That is different from evidence that December COE premiums routinely rise or fall. Price a real offer and identify the deadline that applies to it.
The relevant 2026 EV deadline
LTA’s announced schedule ends EEAI after 2026 and changes VES benefits for 2027. The maximum combined ARF reduction for an eligible electric car is $30,000 in 2026 and $20,000 in 2027. The actual difference depends on the vehicle’s ARF and emissions treatment.
Registration timing matters. An order or deposit in December does not by itself establish eligibility for the year’s benefit. The 2026 versus 2027 EV guide works through the calculation and how a package-price change can offset it.
Get the delivery promise in writing
Confirm stock, exact variant, bidding attempts, the registration deadline and the final payable price. Ask who bears a changed tax or incentive amount if delivery slips. Identify the refund or alternative remedy in the signed agreement.
A sales target, “year-end deal” label or estimated shipment date is not a guaranteed saving. Compare offers including compulsory finance, insurance and trade-in conditions.
Read both exercises separately
The first and second December exercises have different dates and may have different quota. The earlier article did not establish that one reliably beats the other. A final-hour bid pattern also cannot prove how dealers will behave in the next exercise.
Put a value on waiting
Write down temporary transport, the cost of holding your existing car and any registration benefit at risk. Then compare complete packages, including the possibility that either price rises. Do not count an incentive reduction twice if it is already included in the quoted price.
If there is no applicable policy deadline and no urgent transport need, there is no evidence in this article for paying extra merely to complete the purchase before the calendar turns. Keep the decision tied to the contract and budget.
