Parallel Importer vs Authorised Dealer: What to Verify

· 3 min read

Compare the exact vehicle, warranty provider, servicing arrangements and final contract instead of assuming one sales channel is always cheaper or safer.

Two cars with the same badge can have different specifications, support arrangements and contractual protections. Compare the exact offers from an authorised dealer and a parallel importer before deciding which is better value.

Start with the vehicle identity

Record the variant, source market, manufacture information, approved specifications and registration eligibility. Check equipment item by item: airbags and driver assistance, infotainment language, maps, connected services, charging hardware where relevant and included accessories.

Do not assume a source-market version has weaker air conditioning, different rust protection or the same crash-test performance. Those are model-specific questions requiring documentation.

Get the warranty in writing

Identify the legal provider, covered components, duration, mileage limit, claim cap, excess, exclusions and servicing obligations. Establish whether it is backed by the manufacturer, importer or a third-party warranty business.

Ask what happens if the selling business closes or the nominated workshop changes. An authorised-dealer label is not a guarantee against all commercial risk, and a parallel-import label does not establish that a warranty is worthless.

Check support before purchase

Confirm who will perform repairs, whether diagnostics and software updates are supported, and how recalls are communicated. If you plan to use an authorised service centre, obtain confirmation that it will service the exact variant and clarify any warranty limitations.

Compare final payable amounts

Match COE arrangements, registration timing, equipment, warranty, finance conditions and GST-inclusive price. A price difference is not a saving if it buys a materially different vehicle or omits support you need.

For a hypothetical $8,000 cheaper offer, list the value you assign to missing equipment, any extra service cost and the warranty risk. If those cannot be priced confidently, show a range rather than inventing a fixed resale premium.

Insurance and consumer questions

Obtain insurance for the exact variant before signing. Do not assume insurers treat every imported specification identically. If a dispute arises, the contract, seller and applicable consumer rules matter; neither “fully protected” nor “no recourse” is an adequate general statement.

Keep the specification sheet, sales agreement and written promises. Use total cost to compare the complete offers. There is no verified general $5,000–$20,000 channel saving or $2,000–$5,000 resale premium established here.
