First-Time Car Buyer: A Checklist Before Paying a Deposit

· 3 min read

Work through your budget, vehicle checks, financing and COE contract terms before committing to a first car in Singapore.

Your first-car shortlist should come after a transport and budget check. Write down the journeys the car must serve, the deposit you can provide and the monthly amount left after essential expenses and savings.

1. Check the routine

Consider work, children, care appointments, parking and occasional longer trips. Test available alternatives against those trips. A generic claim that all households of one income should own or avoid a car is not a substitute for your actual routine.

2. Get a complete budget

Include insurance, road tax, energy, parking, ERP, servicing and repairs alongside loan payments. Keep the deposit and emergency reserve separate. The worked budget guide explains how to avoid counting principal or depreciation twice.

3. Check the exact vehicle

For a new car, confirm the approved variant, category, equipment and warranty. For a used car, add service history, an independent inspection, remaining COE and actual rebate records. A five-year renewed car COE is final and cannot be renewed again.

A category label or a popular brand does not guarantee cheap maintenance, strong resale or a fault-free vehicle. Price the condition you are actually buying.

4. Compare written offers

Obtain the final payable price with its finance, insurance and trade-in conditions. Identify the legal seller and warranty provider. Treat association membership and online reviews as information to examine, not guarantees of performance.

5. Read the COE clauses

Confirm bidding attempts, delivery deadline, permitted top-ups, rebate level and cancellation/refund terms. Do not assume an unsuccessful bid automatically rolls forward indefinitely or that every quoted package guarantees registration.

6. Arrange finance and insurance

Use the lender’s approved amount, effective rate, fees and repayment schedule. Obtain insurance for your actual drivers and use before committing to a vehicle. A newly licensed driver should check acceptance and any additional excess directly.

7. Verify at collection

Check the vehicle, registered particulars, included equipment, recorded promises, insurance and road-tax status. Keep signed documents and receipts. Do not expect a physical road-tax disc as proof of validity.

If the budget is too tight

Reduce the commitment, change the shortlist or defer the purchase. A speculative future COE fall, unverified cheap renewed-car listing or hoped-for private-hire income is not a dependable way to fill a recurring shortfall.

Use the affordability calculator with your own inputs. It is a planning tool, not a lender approval or a guarantee that one model is best for every first-time buyer.
