Chinese New Year and COE Prices: Evidence and Buying Deadlines

· 2 min read

Separate holiday delivery pressure from a proven COE price effect, and compare the cost of waiting with the terms of your car package.

Wanting a car before Chinese New Year creates a real personal deadline. It does not establish that the holiday reliably raises COE premiums, or that buying a fixed number of weeks before or after it will save money.

Why January versus February is an incomplete test

Chinese New Year moves across the two months. A monthly average mixes exercises before and after the holiday, as well as different quota and market conditions. Calling February “the holiday month” throughout a decade can misclassify the observations.

What a useful holiday study would require

Start with verified exercise dates and the holiday date for each year. Define the same pre-holiday and post-holiday windows before examining the outcomes. Compare category-specific premiums and quota changes, and show the number of observations, exceptions and uncertainty.

A broader COE upswing could produce higher pre-holiday prices even without holiday demand. Registration incentives or changed bidding dates could also affect the comparison. The earlier article’s claims of a statistically established decade-long effect were not backed by a reproducible study and have been removed.

Manage the delivery deadline

Ask the seller whether the vehicle is in stock, which exercise is covered and what must happen before registration and collection. Record a promised delivery date and the outcome if it is missed. Distinguish a firm contractual commitment from an estimated arrival date.

If the car is mainly needed for a few holiday journeys, obtain an alternative transport budget. Include booking availability, passengers, luggage and the trips actually required. This gives the deadline an explicit financial value.

A hypothetical waiting decision

Suppose temporary transport costs $600 and the later package is $2,000 cheaper on otherwise identical terms. The saving after that transport cost is $1,400. If the package instead rises $2,000, waiting costs $2,600. These are sensitivity cases, not probabilities or forecasts.

Use the archive appropriately

Historical exercises can help explain what happened in a particular year. They should not become a promise that “three weeks after CNY” is always the right buying window. Decide using an affordable written offer and your own deadline.
