When Should You Buy a Car? A Cost-of-Waiting Framework

· 2 min read

Compare a car offer today with the costs and uncertainties of waiting, without relying on an unproven cheapest month for COE.

The right time to buy depends on the package you can afford, when you need transport and what waiting costs. No calendar month guarantees a cheap COE.

Start with a comparable offer

Record the final price, variant, COE arrangement, finance terms, insurance condition and delivery date. A later promotion is only cheaper if those terms are comparable. The auction premium by itself is not the whole purchase.

Measure the cost of delay

If you have no car, use the actual journeys you would otherwise pay for. If replacing a car, estimate its change in sale value, running expenses and any repairs during the wait. Do not count both total depreciation and the same lost COE entitlement separately.

Include a known registration-policy deadline where relevant. For an EV crossing into 2027, calculate the actual incentive difference rather than assuming every model loses the maximum amount.

Work through both directions

Assume an offer today is $180,000 and waiting costs $1,200. If a comparable future offer is $177,000, waiting saves $1,800 overall. At $183,000, it costs $4,200 more. These scenarios show exposure; they do not assign a likelihood to either outcome.

The break-even future price in that simplified example is $178,800. That threshold gives you something concrete to compare with a future quote. Add any different finance interest, trade-in proceeds or registration benefit before making the final decision.

Give historical patterns the right weight

A monthly average describes the selected history and method. It does not remove quota cycles, moving holidays or changes in buyer demand. The earlier claims that May–July were statistically proven best months were unsupported and have been withdrawn.

Use a decision rule you can keep

Set a maximum complete cost and a latest acceptable delivery date. Reassess when a written quote, official quota announcement or personal need changes. Avoid increasing the budget solely because you fear missing an alleged permanent price floor.

If every available offer leaves too little reserve, changing the vehicle or transport plan matters more than choosing a bidding month.
