What Happens When Your COE Expires?
Plan renewal or disposal before expiry, understand the limited late-renewal window, and keep COE, inspection and road-tax requirements separate.
Check the exact COE expiry date in your vehicle record and plan the next step before it arrives. An expired vehicle cannot continue to be used on the road simply because you intend to renew it.
Choose a route before the deadline
If retaining the car, check renewal eligibility, term and the applicable PQP. If leaving ownership, arrange sale before expiry or deregistration and proper disposal. Export is one disposal route; deregistration is not synonymous only with scrapping.
Do not rely on an assumed reminder date. Record your own deadline and allow time for financing, workshop work, a replacement vehicle and alternative transport.
Renewal timing
LTA permits renewal within one month after expiry with a late fee. This is not a driving grace period. If renewal is not completed within the permitted window, the vehicle must be disposed of under the applicable requirements.
Early renewal and expiry-month renewal have different commencement rules. Compare the entitlement lost through early payment with any PQP difference. The renewal guide sets out the detail.
Check the existing renewal term
A car on its final five-year renewed COE cannot be renewed again. The option list therefore depends on the vehicle’s history, not just the fact that an expiry date is approaching.
Inspection and road-tax requirements are separate from paying PQP. Arrange any inspection due and ensure insurance and road tax are valid before road use. Do not treat a successful renewal payment as proof that all other requirements have been met.
If disposing of the vehicle
The owner remains responsible for proper disposal and submitting the required documents. LTA specifies a one-month period after deregistration for completing disposal/document requirements. Agree who handles transport and paperwork, and keep acknowledgements.
Check PARF eligibility for the exact date and original cohort, unused COE if any, and a separate body/export quotation. Statutory rebates do not include a generic export-duty deduction. A final trade-in offer may already include rebate value, so avoid adding it twice.
Close out the associated arrangements
Resolve any finance settlement, contact the insurer about cancellation terms, deal with parking and payment accounts, and follow the official number-retention process if desired. Do not assume the registration number must always be abandoned.
For a current transaction, use LTA’s renewal or deregistration service and the actual vehicle record. The comparison calculator is for planning the financial options.
