ERP 2 in 2027: An OBU Checklist for Car Owners

· வாசிப்பு நேரம்: 6 நிமிடம்

Prepare for the January 2027 ERP 2 transition with checks for OBU faults, warranty, payment responsibility and vehicle handover.

Checked 14 September 2026. Singapore’s ERP 2 transition is scheduled for 1 January 2027. For an owner, the preparation goes beyond having a new device installed: check its operation, payment arrangements and the responsibilities that follow your vehicle.

Recent Reddit reports about OBU faults raise practical questions about repairs and carpark access. They identify problems worth explaining; they do not establish a device failure rate or diagnose another owner’s vehicle.

What changes on 1 January 2027

Announced changes relevant to ordinary Singapore vehicle owners
ItemWhat to prepare for
ERP 2 road chargingCheck that the required OBU is installed and working; certain vehicle schemes are exempt.
Missed paymentsThe owner becomes responsible for settling outstanding ERP charges.
Unsettled chargesAfter the five-day grace period from LTA’s SMS notification, the charge plus a $10 administration fee must be settled to restore access to affected vehicle services.

LTA lists affected services including road-tax renewal, vehicle transfer and use or encashment of PARF/COE rebates. Treat the payment check as part of preparing a sale or disposal. The effective date is in the future at this article’s review date. LTA’s 3 February 2026 announcement.

Check your installation deadline and vehicle scheme

Do not assume that waiting until December preserves every free-installation entitlement. LTA’s announcement gives owners receiving a final reminder a three-month free-installation window from that reminder, followed by installation charges of $35 for motorcycles and $70 for other vehicles.

Exemptions include specified restricted-use vehicles and Classic/Vintage schemes. Exemption does not necessarily mean exemption from ERP charges. Check the scheme-specific arrangements with LTA instead of applying an ordinary private-car checklist to every vehicle.

Use your actual notification and the official OBU information and booking links. Before the appointment, record the vehicle’s condition, bring the requested items and ask where components will be fitted. Keep the installation date and workshop details.

An OBU error needs a fault report, not a guessed diagnosis

LTA directs owners with an inspection notice to follow its instructions. If you suspect a fault without receiving a notice, its guidance points you to the installing workshop. Check the current authorised inspection-centre list if that workshop cannot assist. Confirm the appointment and what inspection is available before travelling.

A useful report contains the exact message, when it appeared, whether payment or access failed and whether the problem repeats. When safely parked, record a photo if appropriate. Note any recent vehicle work, without assuming it caused the fault.

  • A roadworthiness inspection and a specific OBU diagnosis answer different questions.
  • A new battery alone does not establish that every power, wiring or device issue has been excluded.
  • An online report of a similar message does not prove your vehicle has the same cause.
  • Do not attempt wiring changes or device modification based on a forum reply.

If a carpark gate will not open, follow the operator’s assistance procedure and retain any payment record. Avoid repeatedly manoeuvring at the barrier while trying to troubleshoot equipment. Raise disputed charges with the relevant operator or authority using the actual transaction details.

Know what the warranty does

LTA describes an OBU warranty lasting five years from first installation, subject to coverage conditions. Free replacement parts follow the original warranty period. The device’s continuing warranty remains with it on a vehicle ownership transfer. Check the recorded expiry through the official Manage OBU service rather than assuming buying a used car starts a new five-year term.

A warning message is not itself a promise of a free repair. Ask the authorised service provider for the diagnosis, applicable coverage and any charge before authorising work. Retain the job sheet, including what was checked and replaced. Device relocation or other OBU work also needs the appropriate authorised service.

Prepare the people who use the car

If several family members drive it, decide who checks notifications and payments. After the new owner-responsibility rule begins, a household should not depend on the person driving that day remembering to forward every message.

For a rental, company or shared vehicle, read the agreement’s payment and reimbursement terms. The administrative process between LTA and the registered owner is separate from how a driver reimburses an owner under their agreement. Do not assume a rental fee includes every ERP charge or administration fee.

Check the payment method actually configured for your vehicle and keep an appropriate backup for carparks requiring a physical card. A successful payment at one location does not establish that every carpark uses the same access or payment system.

Before a sale, purchase or deregistration

  1. Check unresolved notices and charges through official channels.
  2. Record the device status, warranty expiry and included components at handover.
  3. Agree who resolves an outstanding fault and when.
  4. Update relevant vehicle-linked payment arrangements after the transfer.
  5. If retaining or transferring equipment, obtain the authorised procedure before anyone removes it.

Keep this checklist alongside the used-car inspection guide or the disposal and payout guide. A device problem and an outstanding payment are separate matters, even if either disrupts the same planned transaction.

ERP 2 does not establish a distance-based charging start date

LTA’s ERP 2 FAQ says there are no immediate plans to impose distance-based pricing. Do not interpret the January 2027 system transition as a confirmed date for paying by kilometre. Technology capability, charging policy and the price for a particular route are separate questions.

A practical preparation list

Check the installation notice now, test normal use, resolve persistent faults, confirm payment arrangements and keep the service records. Near a sale or renewal, repeat the account check. Use the official notice and current guidance for your vehicle, especially if it is foreign-registered or on a special scheme.

Sources and scope: the linked LTA announcement and ERP 2 FAQ were reviewed on 14 September 2026. Reddit supplies the reader question, not the repair diagnosis. The checklists are editorial recommendations; no failure-rate survey, workshop service guarantee or future kilometre-charge estimate is claimed.
